Oatmeal cookies are great. Molasses cookies are great. Oatmeal and molasses cookies, sweetened with maple syrup and molasses, are even greater. Blend one egg with 1/4 c molasses and 1/4 c maple syrup. Melt 1/2 c butter (1 stick) and add to the mixture. In a separate bowl, combine 2/3 c white flour, 2/3 c whole wheat flour, and 2/3 c oatmeal with 1/4 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 2 tsp cinnamon, 2 tsp ginger, 2 tsp cocoa, and a dash of salt. It feels like a very tropical smoothie for this time of year, but whatever. When it's good, drink it, regardless of the season! Here's our recipe for a tasty smoothie that is very popular with our little sugarmakers: Start with 1/4 cup coconut milk (we like to use the coconut milk from the can and scoop a mix of the thick creamy coconut with the coconut water) and 1/4 cup another type of milk, or more coconut milk. It's that time of year where we start to load up the sugarhouse with the firewood for spring sugaring season. We move any barrels out of the woodshed side of the sugarhouse and start stacking and by the time we are done there are towers of wood ready to dry out for the coming season.  It's a lot of extra work, certainly more work than flipping a switch and turning on the oil-fired evaporator. The ingredients of fall are so versatile that they beg for experimentation. Sometimes the experimenting leads to great things, like our peanut butter - pumpkin smoothie. Want to give it a try? Here you go: Add one cup of milk to the blender, with 1/2 cup of pureed pumpkin, 1/2 a banana, 1/2 cup of peanut butter (creamy is best, but chunky works), 1/4 - 1/2 cup of maple syrup (vary depending on your sweetness preference!), and a couple of tablespoons of ground flax.
